教育関係という職業柄、これまで乳児から
大学生まで数多くの子どもたちと、その親御さんに
関わってきましたが、その中で私は勉強が
できる子どもには、いくつか共通して見られる
特徴があると気づくことがあります。
中には、その子に先天的に備わっている
特徴ではなく、おそらくその子の親御さんの
育児や接し方が明らかに影響があると思える
特徴もあります。
それらのうち、かなりの確率で「これは
確かな特徴だ！」と言えるものを
ピックアップしてご紹介します。
勉強ができる子は「いやだ！」「やりたくない！」とあまり言わない
例えば、まだ本格的な英語の授業が始まって
いない、小学校低学年の子どもたちのクラスで
「みなさん！今日は、今から簡単な
英語のテストをしてみたいと思います」と
先生が言うと、多くの子どもたちは
「えーーーっ！！なんでーー？」
「えーーーっ！！やだーー！！」
「えーーーっ！！やりたくなーい！！」
など、嫌そうに口々に叫びます。
しかし、その時クラス全体をよく観察していると、
戸惑った表情はしていても、叫ばないで
黙っている子どもたちが必ず何人かいるのです。
また、一見同じように「えーーーっ！！」 と
叫んでいたとしても、顔の表情はニコニコして
楽しそうな子もいます。
実は、新しいことを始めようとする時に、まず
否定の言葉を叫んで、なかなか取り組めない
子どもたちに対して、戸惑いつつも
「おもしろそうだな」「やってみようかな」
と前向きに受け入れる子どもたちの方が、
勉強ができる傾向にあります。
それには親御さんの接し方が、かなり影響して
いるのかもしれないと私は感じます。
というのも、これと同じようなことを、彼らの
親御さんたちに試してみると
「えーーーっ！！」 「やだーー！！」
と、子どもたちと同じように嫌そうに
叫ぶ人たちは、
「えーーーっ！！」 「やだーー！！」
と叫んでいた、子どもたちの親御さん
当人であることが多いからです。
新しいことにも前向きに取り組もうとする子は、
たぶん、その親御さんがお子さんの知的好奇心を
うまく育ててきたのではないでしょうか。
知的好奇心が旺盛であることは脳の発達に、
とてもいい影響があるのです！
だから、親御さん自身が何か新しいことに
対して、まず否定の言葉を発したりするのは、
お子さんの脳の成長によくないのかもしれません。
何でも前向きにとらえる姿勢をお子さんに
見せていくようにすると、それを見た
お子さんも変わっていき、知的好奇心が増えて
勉強面でも変化がある可能性大です！
勉強がトップクラスの子にはピアノを習っている子が多い
これは、巷でもよく言われていることですが、
実際はどうなのでしょうか。
特に、男の子。
天才肌と言われる、さりげなく常に成績
トップクラスにいるような男の子は、なぜか
ピアノを習っていて上手に弾ける子が多いです。
アメリカ在住でギフテッド（IQが高い天才）として
有名になった日系人の男の子も、確かピアノが
とても上手でした。
ちなみに、これは私周辺での調査結果ですが、
ショパンを好んで弾く子は、文系科目に
たけていて、モーツアルトを好んで弾く子には、
理系の子が多いようです。
私なりの考えですが、ショパンの曲は
メロディーラインが美しく物語性があって、
モーツアルトの曲は四分音符や八分音符など、
きっちり分けられる数学的な美しさがあるから
かもしれません。
とはいっても、中学生や高校生になってから
「さあ、これからピアノを習いなさい！成績が
上がるかもしれないよ」と親御さんが突然
言い出したとしても、現実はなかなかそうは
いかないと思います。
ただし！！
ピアノでなく、エレクトーンだとしたら
どうでしょう。
実は、エレクトーンと勉強に関しても、
意外な関係性があるのです。
エレクトーンを始めてから突然数学ができるようになった！？
私が勤める学習塾で、高1まで数学がかなり
不得意だった男子生徒がいました。
ところが、春休みが過ぎて高2になったら、
彼は突然数学がスラスラ解けるように
なっていたのです。
もちろん、それには彼自身の努力もあった
はずですが、お母さんの話では「春休み中に
姉のエレクトーンの発表会を見て刺激を受け、
独学でエレクトーンを弾き始めた。もしかして、
エレクトーンを始めたことが数学に影響して
いないだろうか？」とのことでした。
しかも、この男子学生以外にも、大きくなって
エレクトーンに真剣に取り組み始めた後から、
なぜか数学がよくできるようになったという
生徒さんがいました。
私は、そういった話には完全に半信半疑
だったのですが、後日、偶然にもそれと同じような
出来事がなんと我が家に起きたのです！
我が家の娘は、高3までは理系科目が
苦手で、特に数学に関しては、数学での
大学受験を全て諦めたほどでした。
そんな子が大学受験が終わってから、
休んでいたエレクトーンを再開しました。
さらに大学入学と同時に、エレクトーン指導者
グレードを取得するために懸命に練習し始めると、
その辺りから突然、数学がよく解けるように
なったのです。
本人も全く原因が分からないそうですが、
数学の能力はその後も発達していったようで、
半年ほどで塾のアルバイトで、中・高校生に
数学を教えるまでになりました。
エレクトーン演奏は、さまざまなボタンや
レバーの操作をしながら左右の手と足を同時に
バラバラに使って演奏を行います。
こうした複雑な演奏方法を集中して
鍛錬していくと、聴覚だけでなく、運動神経も
研ぎ澄まされるなどして、おそらく何か脳に
影響する点があるのかもしれません。
それにしても、エレクトーンを練習すれば数学が
得意になるなんて、本当に不思議な話ですよね！
勉強ができる子どもたちは自然に接する経験をたくさんしている
これも、巷で言われていることの一つです。
私が勤務している学習塾は東京近隣にあり、
生徒さんたちは普段あまり自然に接する
機会はないように思うのですが、勉強が
できる子の多くは、田舎のお爺ちゃんや
お婆ちゃんの所や、週末に山や海・公園などに
出かけて、植物や虫、鳥などの自然のものに
接して遊ぶ経験をたくさんしています。
これは、親御さんがお子さんたちを自然の中へ
連れ出して、いろいろなものに触れるように
したいという考えがあるのでしょう。
やはりこれも、普段自然と触れ合うことが
少ない子どもたちが、自然と接することで
知的好奇心が大いに養われることに
繋がるのではないでしょうか。
もし今、勉強に伸び悩んでいるお子さんを
お持ちの親御さんは、「勉強しなさい！」と
お説教する代わりに、週末に一緒に自然の中に
出かけてはどうでしょう。
